Torrential rainfall and blockage of natural drainage have led to flooding in some parts of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State. Worst areas affected include Okwovwori, Amukpe, and Urhakpa.

Chief Eugene Inoaghan, Executive Chairman Sapele Local Government Council, Chief Julius Egbedi, Member Representing Sapele, Okpe and Ethiope West Local Government Areas on the Board of Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Chief Perkins Umukoro, Member Representing Sapele Constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly on Friday, August 4th, 2023 visited the flooded areas to enable them ascertain the cause of the flood and profer lasting solution to the problem which has sacked many residents from their homes.
They observed that the flood in some areas was caused by some individuals who built their houses on natural water ways, while flood in some other parts of the town was caused by indiscrimate dumping of refuse by residents in drainage, an act which has interrupted the free flow of water, thereby causes flood.

Eugene Inoaghan while addressing newsmen said, "I decided to go on an assessment tour to see the affected areas, after I was informed that flood was ravaging the town. Having seen for myself, I want to assure residents that the State government in collaboration with the local government will ensure that flood becomes a thing of the past. I will bring in swamp buggies, excavators, marsh buggies to open the water channels that have been blocked by refuse".
I am also using this opportunity to appeal to residents of Sapele, to desist from dumping refuse inside drainage, canals and water ways. Those who built their house, or business on water ways should not blame government, because their structures will be pulled down, he said.
In the same vein, the representative of the people on the Board of DESOPADEC, Chief Julius Egbedi said, "DESOPADEC is an interventionist Board and the Delta State government has instructed that DESOPADEC in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment should inspect areas that are prone to flood and profer lasting solution". He said that DESOPADEC has began work in Ughelli and environs and soon they will be in Sapele. He frowned at residence who use water ways as their refuse dump.

"There is need to enforce law against people who do not have dustbin in their compound and dump refuse indiscriminately, I believe they should be sanction, it will also help to avert the problem of flood in the future", he added.
Hon Perkins Umukoro on his part said, "my attention was drawn by some of my constituents, and I immediately swung into action".

In the company of the Executive Chairman of Sapele and the DESOPADEC representative, I inspected flood affected areas in the local government.

"I went from Amukpe to Vitafoam to Okwovwori to Urhakpa and during my inspection, I observed that some of the residents have been sacked by the flood, they have been forced to take refuge somewhere else.

I will draw the attention of the State Emergency Relief Agency to give relief materials to these persons that have been displace by the flood, he added.

Although, none of the house built on water ways was marked for demolition, they agreed to take measures that will help to contain the situation and abate the suffering of residents whose house were flooded.
