OPONE COMMENDS GOV. OKOWA FOR SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN DELTA

Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has been lauded for his administration's commitment towards encouraging sports development and thus tackling unemployment in the state through sports.
The Principal of Zappa Basic Secondary School, Asaba, Comrade Godson Opone made the commendaton in Asaba in his welcome address during the 13th Annual Inter-House Sports Competition of the school.
Mr. Opone, who underscored the importance of sports in the child's development, said that it was a worldwide activity that should be promoted in schools so as to achieve all round development of the child.
He stated that academics was not the only way to develop a child, adding that every child needed to engage in sporting development for their health benefits.
Mr. Opone noted that sports would enhance the growth and development of the talents and skills of a child through the introduction of co-curricular activities, stressing that such initiative would always impact on the the children.
The Principal, who is the Oshimili South Secretary-General of the ANCOPSS , said that Zappa Basic Secondary School was always known for her commitment in achieving physical, mental and intellectual wellbeing of her children.
Mr. Opone also lauded the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, especially the Secondary Education Commissioner, Mrs. Rose Ezewu and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Augustine Oghoro for their support .
He hinted that the school was in dire need of table tennis courts and equipment, generating set to pump water for the students and staff, desks and chairs for students and library shelves and books as well as megaphones and school bands .
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Obi Dr. Ibiegbunem Isichei and the retired Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Technical Education, Dr. Moses Bragiwa said that sports was very critical for the overall health and physical development of every individual .
Obi Dr. Isichei , who is a patron of one of the houses and Dr. Moses Bragiwa , a patron of the White house said that they would always support the school for the sports development of the children.
Obi Isichei said that he was happy that there was a well refined Zappa Basic Secondary School, adding that in diaspora, they were having a different notion of the school just as he reiterated that sports was important for the all round development of a child.
Speaking to journalists, the Principal of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, Dr. Mrs. Obiajulu Eboka admonished every individual to indulge in exercises and sporting activities in order to remain healthy.
