A fairy tale story of Former President Goodluck Jonathan being the son of a fisherman and becoming the President of Nigeria in recent times happened before our very eyes. Like Jonathan, there is an Idjerhe man whose meteoric rise in the political firmament of Delta State has been outstanding too, former Executive Director of Finance and Administration of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission DESOPADEC and Frontline Aspirant for Delta Central Senatorial seat, Chief Barr John Obukowho Nani.
An Illustrious son of Jesse in Ethiope West local government area of Delta State, he is a performer who has surpass all expectations since he was first appointed as the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State.
Nani, ever a dogged fighter with an enduring capacity for a durable or marathon race, has been a key player in the establishment of the party from the 90s, an active youth leader, Nani's days in the University of Benin was a combination of active politicking and education.
Thus, Nani, a University of Benin trained lawyer rose through the rank from the Publicity Secretary to Special Adviser on Youth Development to House of Assembly member, through to Commissioner of Environment and then DESOPADEC Executive Director for Finance and Administration where he served meritoriously, opening drainage and de-flooding several communities in the state.
In spite of the case of flooding that was prevalent then, Nani's appointment was like a square peg in a square hole, from Asaba to Sapele to Ughelli to Bomadi, he battled flood linking canals to canals and de - flooding areas hitherto known for sacking residents and relocating them.
Aside finding modern ways to carry out his duty, he also enunciated radical measures to move the ministry to the next level.
With his multiple projects as House of Assembly member in Ethiope West Local Government Area, Nani legacy as an executer of projects dotting his constituency cranked up a Chieftaincy title for him from his people called "Aghwemutuwevwi", which literally means "he who brings good things home".
The question in the forthcoming party primaries for a better candidate who will bear the party flag is not, who among the aspirants has a better vision for Delta Central, but who will act to make that vision a reality. If we are ready for the truth, we must demand performance, character, competence and integrity of those seeking to be the next Delta Central Senator, firstly under the PDP, then the election proper.
Nani's character, competence and capacity to go to the Senate and attract projects while passing bills, is not in doubt, the era of imposition while there are better candidate who are more qualified to make the Senatorial district develop, is gone.
Knowledgeable and competent leadership are prerequisites for the progress of a diverse areas such as ours. Therefore Nani's competent leadership and good governance have become a critical tool in achieving inclusiveness, and attaining high level of productivity in all areas in Delta Central..
It takes a purposeful leader to harness these and make better things happen. More than ever before, we need Barr Obukowho Nani who understands the working of the state.
John Nani is someone that can deliver on his promises. Everywhere you look, our economic landscape has negative outlook, devastated by inept leadership and flip-flop policies. For the first time, it’s time to look beyond primordial sentiments, get a thinker who can deploy ideas to solving the challenges facing our region and the people. Nani has proven that he is a good manager of resources. His experience in both private and public sectors makes him eminently qualified for the job. He brims with confidence whenever he says he has what it takes to elevate the Delta Central Senatorial district.
Irrespective of the huddles the Urhobo nation faces. If track record of success is a guide for the kind of Senator Delta Central must produce, Nani has all the qualities.
That our district has compiled dismal records in every areas of legislating under the present senator is not in doubt, It is largely because our representative at the red chambers has failed to think in a creative way and deploy ideas that will change things.
A new direction is needed, a new set of leadership with focus has become imperative, the allure of power and glamour of the red chamber should not be the driving objective for some of these aspirants. The challenge to move Delta Central to the next level should supercede all things. For that to happen, Delta Central PDP and PDP in general must put its house in order. Nani possess the imaginative visionary attributes to achieve great things with power if given the opportunity to fly the party’s flag in the upcoming party primaries that will usher in a new government.
